Back against the tree bark, Hayden slipped her fingers around the red-orange object, handling it with care. Leaves, especially one falling for autumn, were fragile things. Sturdy considering their thickness, but fragile nonetheless. She held up an open hand for the wind to take it away as her iPod switched over to a new song.
"No time for goodbye," he said as he faded away. "Don't put your life in someone's hands, they're bound to steal it away. Don't hide your mistakes, 'cause they'll find you, burn you." Then he said, "If you want to get out alive, oh, run for your life."
At those last few words, her eyes began to sting and her throat felt like it was closing up. Her hand, leaf long gone, clenched into an angry fist, nails digging into her palm as her eyes flew shut. It was incredible how close songs could hit to home sometimes. This one, this was almost identical to her life. She reached to her pocket, turning the small device off and wrapping the headphone wire around it before shoving the whole thing in her pocket. She took one deep, calming breath, letting the memories go as best she could and the stinging faded, her throat unclenched and she instantly looked as if nothing had happened, no memories had stirred, no pain had been felt. But it had. She didn't want questions, she didn't want to talk, she just wanted to live, to forget and be forgotten by them.
So, she stood up, brushing the debris off her black Capri's. Her hands soon after found her pockets, her police badge in one and her CIA id in the other. The latter was a reminder of what had happened, what she had to avoid. She wouldn't be used again, not a chance. The former was simply part of everyday life now. She'd started working at police department here. It was hard adjusting, taking more than a few seconds to come up with an idea that would potentially work; not complain that she was best suited for the task at hand when they needed some sort of covert-like work done. She simply couldn't, though, and she knew it. It would raise questions.
As far as they knew, she'd gone through an average university, with some psychology and criminology classes, lots of language classes, and had then gone through the academy. She'd started off at another station, Baltimore PD in fact, and been transferred in when she'd moved residences. She really wasn't sure how a regular cop could deal with the idiots in the world and not retaliate; she'd been tempted more than once. But, she'd held back, so far. She needed to keep her cover, no matter how annoying it was. She sighed softly, beginning the rather long walk home.

KINGSTON KROWN King walked threw the park, he had on a white button up short sleeve shirt with jeans and cowboy boots. His badge was attached to the belt on his hip. He had a glock stuck in the holster at his hip and few other weapons hidden threw out his body. Such as a bowie knife and two other guns. He walked down the street his eyes checking on the usual things, such as how many cars were in front of the bar and how many people were in the bank at once and how many people were in and out. Usually he was stuck in his dang desk all day, being Sheriff, but he'd had a tip on a drug deal about to go down and King was in on the sting.
A plain clothes cop was stationed in a building near where the deal was going down. King slid his badge into his pocket before he reached within twenty yards of the deal and slid his glock into his empty arm holster and slid a light carrhart jacket over it to conceal the weapon. He slipped off his hip holster and tossed it into his GMC truck before slipping on his stetson, low over his eyes, and walking out again into the sun.
King was walking at an easy pace, glancing into the shops as he went. The wire transmitter in his ear buzzed loud as the other radios were flipped on. "Station 1 check," King said into the hidden mike at his collar. A various amount of checks went threw before the line went silent. King moseyed into a random tailoring shop, glancing at random shirts by the window. He watched the truck with one particular license plate drive by. "On the move," King said, leaving the shop and heading in the direction the truck went. All the sudden there was a scream, two loud gunshots, and the peeling of tires. "Shit!" King said, jerking into action as pedestrians fell to the ground or ran into stores.
King's long sprinting strides taking him swiftly down the the corner, into a short ally. His earpiece was screaming off the hook with voices all trying to check in and see what happened. Officer Daniels lay on the ground, one gunshot wound to his arm and on that had banked the cement and hit a tree. King crouched over the officer, other cars were on hot pursuit of the car in suspect. "Hang on buddy, we got an ambulance on the way," King said, since their line was directly hooked to the police office. King looked up, just in time to spot a familiar face, Hayden Donovan, a new employee at the police department. Not that he knew her real well, but he would soon, it was his job to know everything about everyone, or at least he made it his job.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i55.tinypic.com/156ra7r.jpg] Hayden's instinct kicked in before her common sense. She saw the sheriff, the otehr officers, the ones who didn't expect her to have the knowledge she did. But that didn't matter. When it came to gunfire, her mind shot instantly to her training and the hidden gun was pulled out immediately. She followed the path of the car with a calm expression, gun following it, aiming just ahead and firing. There was the bang of the gunshot, the pop of the tire, then the screeching as the deflated tire sent the car into a spin. She didn't react, just aimed, fired again and took out the other rear tire. Unable to go further, the car slid to a stop. She didn't care how far it was. She'd hit the target if they tried to run.
And run they did. Two more pops of gunshots and both were down, a bullet in each left knee. They weren't going anywhere fast enough to be a problem. She shoved the gun back into her waistband and turned to face the sheriff, only now realizing she'd just made a big mistake.
She wasn't supposed to be that good. She was just a transfer from Baltimore. At least, to him.
She didn't let it phase her, though, face staying just as emotionless as it had while shooting. She couldn't give away the vague fear that she may have given herself away. She moved closer, tugging her thin sweater off and kneeling at the fallen officer's side.
We should tie this off. Decrease blood flow.
She muttered, more to explain what she was doing to the injured man and she carefully wrapped the sweater over his arm, tying it over top of the wound, the folding up part of the sweater pressing firmly on the wound, the knot in the sleeves opposite the wound.

KINGSTON KROWN King nodded, he pulled a pen from his pocket and slipped it under the knot in the sweater and began to twist it tightly, creating a tourniquet. The other officer screamed in pain, he'd tried to hide it at first but he couldn't help it. "I don't think it hit anything big, looks clean to me." King watched a couple of his men run up, out of breath.
King stood up, his temper flaring in his eyes. "Where the hell were you two?! Do you realize what you just did? You were his 'back up'!" King growled with a furiously low tone. The worse thing about him, he didn't yell, he just talked lower, like there was more hell to come, like he held that same awesome power over you like that monster under your bed used to when you were little. He was that unknown fear that scared people.
King stared at them, "Desk duty for a month and then we'll see. Now get back to the office, now." The two officers headed back to their cars in a scurry. One was female and one was male and obviously there was something between the two of them that had caused them to forget about their own. 'And that's what happens when people get involved,' he thought, not realizing he'd said it out loud.
King turned back to the fallen officer. "What happened?"
Officer Daniels sat up slowly, clenching his arm with his good hand. He winced at the pain before he looked up at King, the guy was in shock. "The car just saw me. I don't even know. The jackass didn't even stop, he slowed down, cracked his window, shot and then... I don't even know...," the officer said.
"Hey, it's ok." He could hear the faint sounds of sirens from the ambulance. "We're going to get everything cleared out by this afternoon. You just relax," King said, crouching next to the guy, looking him straight in the eyes with the closest thing you'd ever see to comfort on that hideous face. King's scar deflected a lot of people, and the only thing that attracted the opposite sex would be the money signs on all his clothes and his car and everything else. But he mostly wore expensive things to cattleman meetings or to his board meetings, well kind of. Plus he had a very sick corvette, a 'write me up' red color.
Standing up from his crouch, King motioned two of his men over and ordered them to go retrieve the local footage of the whole scene and take it as evidence. He then motioned another guy to start the clean up process. King then moved away from the scene and grabbed 'Officer' Donovan's arm and moved her away with him. He then realized how tight he'd been gripping her arm and he relaxed it immediately. Things like... he looked at Officer Daniels, now being lifted into the ambulance via stretcher, always set him on edge. The big lion like guy turned into a very touchy deer. His ears were listening, his hands itching to hold his gun, but he wouldn't grab it, guns freaked the public out a little more than someone being shot, believe it or not. Especially in California. Somewhere like in Texas, it wouldn't be a big deal, but in California... people were just different.
King snuck Hayden away from the big crowd and the police officers toward his GMC. King's grip tightened on her arm quickly and he jammed her against the side of his truck, the two of them hidden in the shadow of a tree. King had pulled his gun on her and held it hidden in the shadow of his jacket to her gut. "Who do you work for," his voice low and demanding. The movements had all been trained and all been very very clean with an expert handle. But, King being King, he wasn't taking chances, especially not with Cortez still out and on his case.
King's form had changed, and he was now a very tall and muscular man who had several pounds over the woman in front of him. His eyes fierce and dark, the scar on his face ugly and like a waving tribute to his strength, power, and his experience.

And she'd hit far harder than one would expect. She had not lost a single sparring match during her training. Her high school boyfriend who would, no doubt, have been abusive to any other girl had been scared shitless of her. She certainly wasn't to be counted out yet. She fought dirty and fast, and sure he might stand a chance, but she was far closer to equal ground whether he thought it or not. She knew restraint though, knew better than to fight back. At least for now.
Guarded eyes met his as he held the gun to her, then one eyebrow slowly raised, a faint smile creasing her lips, leaving her looking amused. She knew in that instant he wouldn't believe her if she told him the truth. All the more reason to tell him. She ignored the fact she'd been slammed against the side of the truck, thumbs slipping into her belt loops and relaxing, leaning back. She could handle guns pointed her way. Bombs, they were another story. At least, after the last one.
No one.
Her voice was dead serious, there was no joking behind it. After all, it was the truth. A harmless truth, though. Sure, it lead to questions, but the questions alone were harmless. It was the answers that were not so much. She stood straight again, no longer leaning against the truck. Fearless of the gun, she turning, walking casually a few steps further. She'd rather die by his hand than by theirs. She knew that much.
Though I don't see how it's your business. If you'd like to shoot me for stopping the criminals, go right ahead, bud. But it might look bad on your part.

KINGSTON KROWN "Sure you aren't," King said with narrowed eyes. He didn't buy that for a heartbeat.
He raised eyebrows when she said it wasn't his business. "Listen here, I'm the sheriff of this town, and your boss. You and everything you do are my business. And I would seriously reconsider what you just said," King could certainly pull some strings to clean up a simple little 'accident'. But if she truly was working for Cortez she would have said, or she would have shown some sort of sign. He tilted his head back and to the side slightly, his eyes giving her one last measuring stare.
"Alright, you're clean... for now," King said, loosening his hold on her and sticking his gun back in his shoulder holster. If it had been one of Cortez's 'men' she would have already said something, they always rat Cortez out when it comes to their life.
The hideous scar on his face squirmed like a gross thing when he spoke. King turned away from Hayden. "I'll see you at work then." With that he jerked his door open and hopped inside, tossing a few things to the opposite seat. With that he turned the car on, and with only one more glance at her in his side mirror he pulled away from his parking spot and headed down the street.
- - - - - Next day - - - - -
There was an infuriating scream, a male voice laughing at first, then a male voice yelling, the sound of something empty hitting the ground, another female yell and then footsteps emitting from the sheriff's office door. A young girl stalked out of King's office, fists balled and her face was red with anger. Everyone, interested but not surprised watched the girl make skid marks out of the building, screaming all the way that she quit and she had a enough of stupid old men with their stupid stupid issues and insecurities. Yada yada yada. Everyone's eyes returned to the sheriff's door when the girl left.
King, who was covered in shredded paper pieces and bits of trash emerged from the door with a furious expression on his face. People began clapping, "Back to work," King growled angrily, slamming the door to his office closed.

Dropping her stuff (well, her coat) at her desk, she didn't bother looking around, just listened. Little rumors flew about the office as she settled down to start work, and she heard each and every one. Some were unbelievable, some denied previously known facts, but some were useful in figuring out what had happened and those were the ones she paid attention to.
She sighed softly as the mundane boredom that came with her time at work settled in, busying herself with typing up this and that. The demands for detail were significantly less here though, and it was something she could have done in her sleep given the chance. As such, her mind wandered back to the day before. She'd quickly figured out that he wasn't just a sheriff - but he had, apparently, assumed her some sort of plant by an enemy. If only he knew how wrong that was. Not that she was exactly keen on informing him. Yes, he was her boss, but she had no reason to trust him. In fact, she'd spent half the night digging through files and hacking into things to try and determine if he was CIA or not. Any other agency, she could manage to deal with, she was pretty sure. CIA, though, that was bad news. That would mean that they would find he because it was only a matter of time before the strangely talented cop got mentioned, they'd look into it and the thought that she was dead would fly right out of their heads, if it hadn't already. Maybe he was one of them, here to entice her back. It was a plausible idea. She wouldn't put it past them, either.

KINGSTON KROWN King picked up his cell when it rang. "What? What do you mean you're sorry?" There was a knock on his office door and he went to answer, it opened before he could say 'come in'. The door closed firmly. Two men in black suits and a woman dressed in a skirted suit walked in, FBI badges flashing King's way. "What's going on?" King demanded, flipping his cell phone closed, which had gone dead.
"We've got a little situation.... And I need it kept quiet," The woman said. She gave the two men with her a speaking glance and they left, shutting the door firmly as they went.
-----
The two men in shades stood at attention in front of the door like the secret service might, both guys holding in smiles and keeping their faces very straight laced. They loved messing with the policemen and women of small towns.
A couple minutes later the door to the sheriffs office opened, King gave the two the same speaking glance and they smiled sheepishly. "What are you doing?" King asked with a raised brow.
"Nothing... nothing at all...," they replied, quickly stepping aside.
King stepped forward into the middle of the main room and said, "Everyone, I would like to introduce you to our newest members in the police department.... Cash Romero," He motioned to the man with broader shoulders and dark blond hair. "And this is Da-," the darker haired man sent him a furious glance, King's lips quirked upward, but just faintly and only for a second. "Officer O'Rourke." Everyone began sending glances between neighbors, no one buying that they were 'just' police officers, but no one saying anything that might just get them fired.. or worse, shot at. "Well keep them happy and don't let them walk all over you, anyone giving them hell though, will have to deal with me." The last part was sharp and crisp and very familiar to the sound of a rattlesnake, just before it snapped. His eyes unexpectedly meeting with Hayden's his gaze intent as he searched her face.

CIA wouldn't be so obvious, nor would anyone worth their salt. They were FBI. They were nothing. To everyone else, they'd be big, but she hardly gave them a second glance. Well, until King came out and introduced them and she had to look back. She rocked back in her chair, eying them carefully, judging each of them, until he eyes skimmed and caught King's. She raised an eyebrow. Don't let them walk all over the police, yet... they were allowed in just like that? He hadn't seemed the type to give in so easily. Then again, he had people to answer to just like she had before. Perhaps that had something to do with it. She glanced across the room to the only spare desk. She pointed to it.
Looks like they'll have to share. Too bad.
She was pushing it, she knew, but she didn't really care. King could reprimand her, yes, but she wasn't afraid of what he'd say. They could come after her to provide payback, perhaps, but she could kick their asses any day, she was sure of it. She sure as hell wasn't giving up her desk. She wouldn't roll over like a weak puppy. She crossed her arms across her chest, glancing at King, practically daring him to say a word. Unlike yesterday, though, this was no heat of the moment reaction. Each glimpse he got was carefully calculated to not give away a damn thing about her. Well, besides a stubborn streak a mile long.

KINGSTON KROWN King's straight laced face cracked a smidge, his mouth quirking up and he was trying hard not to laugh. He could just IMAGINE the two sharing one desk.... "Too bad," King agreed. He put a hand on each of their shoulders and pushed them in the direction toward the spare desk. "Good luck, and we have a no firearm tolerance here," King slightly joked. Cash gave King a murderous look and O'Rourke had a fallen expression.
"But I can't work with him! Don't you even see what he's wearing?! Pssh! I wouldn't be caught dead in that!" O'Rourke said, using his hand to motion to Cash's identical outfit.
Cash narrowed his eyes and his hand went to his hip, only to realize his gun was missing. Cash looked at King, who was holding the glock with a raised brow, a stern and intimidating look across his face. "Right... No guns...," Cash said, extending his hand to stick the gun back in his holster.
"If you so much as touch that gun while you're in this building I will fine you. Now get to work. I have some papers for you to do," King said with a sly look, 'Pay backs a bitch' was written all over his face.
"But what about-" O'Rourke started to say.
"What about paper work first, fieldwork second? Cop 101, right Officer," King said.
O'Rourke narrowed his eyes, grumbling under his breath and stomping over to his desk, sitting in the rollie chair and kicking his feet up on the desk. Cash, right behind him, grabbed the chair and jerked it out from under O'Rourke, who thumped to the ground. He went to look over at King like a little kid going to tattle.
"I don't want to hear it. Figure it out," King said, going back into his office, pulling his blinds up so he could keep an eye on the two... and the ever mysterious Hayden.
Cash managed to win the chair, the more mature older man didn't have to do much. O'Rourke seemed to give up and stood to the side of the desk. King had one of the off duty dispatchers fill in as his secretary for the rest of the day. The feminine dispatcher delivered a couple of stacks of paper work to each of the officer, O'Rourke staring after her ass. Cash smacked him over the head with a rolled up file. O'Rourke grabbed his head and then reached over and went to smack Cash, but the glare he received made him think again. Cash then went back to doing the paperwork. O'Rourke grumbled and whined and Cash looked about ready to pull his Glock on himself by noon.
"Good God man, you're like a little puppy! Are you even potty trained?!" Cash grumbled, standing up and stretching. "I'm going to need a couple of drinks after work, and that is not an invitation!" Cash grumbled walking briskly into the coffee room. O'Rourke then took that time to stand up and mosey around the room.
He paused at Hayden's desk and his eyes narrowed. "Do I know you?" he asked seriously at first and then he flashed his most charming smile. The guy was almost in his thirties but he hadn't seemed to grow much out of 21 frat boy.
"So, have any clue where the big man got that scar?" O'Rourke asked bluntly. His eyes skimming over her desk quietly, reading all of the case names. They were all mostly petty thief cases.
-Haha omgeee O'Rourke is going to die xD Wait until you see what I have in store for Rourkie ^^-

It didn't work, not for even a moment, but why not have a little fun and pretend it had? She let a smile creep up on her face. It wasn't forced, though it was for far different reasons than he'd imagine. She stood up at that point, slipping around the edge of her desk, coming up beside him.
Mhm. You do, love.
She paused, the slightest hint of malicious intent tinging her smile, not that he was at the angle to notice as she leaned towards his ear, lips nearly brushing the side of his face but carefully kept just shy of this. She knew exactly what she was doing, she'd played this card before a great many times. Her smile grew into a small little grin.
I'm your worst nightmare come to life.
She pulled back, satisfied smirk on her face as her hand found his shoulder, patting it, finger tips hitting a pressure point with each pat as she kept walking right past to the break room to grab a coffee.
And if that works on anyone besides hookers, then they're stupider than you are. Now get back to work and stop gossiping. This isn't a high school lunch hour.
She paused, casting a glance back over he shoulder at him, eyebrow raised, smirk still on her face.
And if you want to know what cases I'm working on, you could just ask, you know. I don't bite... Well, not hard anyway.

KINGSTON KROWN O'Rourke grumbled and went to turn around, smashing right into an on looking King, who had a cup of coffee in his hand, but now.... The brown liquid stained his typically spotless shirt. A very pissed sigh escaped King's ... nose and he crumpled the empty cup in his hand, the veins in his arms and his neck popping out.
O'Rourke smiled sheepishly and shrunk away from King's furry. He grabbed a random napkin off a woman's desk, who had a cookie sitting on the napkin, and began to try and clean up his mistake. "DON'T... TOUCH ME!" King growled, his face furious and he looked about ready to strike.
"I'm uhh... sor-"
"ROURKE! GET- OUT! Just... leave before I shoot you...." King growled, slamming his fist on a desk in anger, the hot coffee burning his skin. Rourke scurried out of the office quick. Cash was watching from the doorway to the coffee room and was snickering quietly. King headed off into his office, "Get back to work! And Somebody clean up that mess!" King shuffled threw his room looking for a shirt. Then he remembered he had taken them home to get them washed and he'd left it in his truck. Grabbing his keys he headed outside to his reserved parking space.
-I'll let you catch up ^^ I was going to kill him.. but then I realized that he was in a police station... not so good when you happen to be the sheriff xD-

There was this wonderful thing known as a window in the break room, so she just watched the reflection, pouring herself a cup of coffee. She chuckled softly, hardly phased by the anger. It wasn't the angry ones you had to watch out for, you knew when they snapped. It was the quiet ones who showed nothing. Still, it couldn't be said she was entirely cold hearted.
Within seconds, she had a second cup of coffee and had slipped out to her '65 mustang, popping the trunk to rummage through a bag with some clothes she always had with her, just in case she needed to run and fast. Pulling out a faded blue dress shirt - slightly rumpled, but clean - she shut the trunk and stopped in front of his truck, putting the coffee cup down on the hood, then placing the shirt next to it. Him and Shane were about the same build, same height. It would work. She knew she was partially at fault for Rourke spinning around into King, but still. Her own coffee still in her hand, she took a sip, ignoring the slight burn as it slid down her throat, and motioned to the shirt.
It should fit.
She watched a moment, expected him to be partly surprised by the fact she had a man's shirt just hanging around in her car trunk. If he knew her better, he wouldn't be surprised at all, but then again, the point was that no one know her. Still a small smirk came to her face, along with an explanation that might only raise more questions.
Rule thirteen. Expect the unexpected.

KINGSTON KROWN King raised a brow at her peace offering. He let his face relax a little more than usual, the scar a little less noticeable. He unbuttoned three of the buttons at the top and then pulled it over his head, trying not to wince as he exposed his chest and back, long slash marks lined his mid back and a couple of old scars from bullets and a few that made little sense. He also had a random sort of brand on the side of his lower abs. It was oddly shaped but definitely a brand. He had a white large bandage wrap across his right shoulder/chest from a very recent injury, there were little brown stains on the white bandage from the coffee. Where they really got nasty was the further down you got the worse the scars got, his narrow hips seemed to be maimed beyond repair, his face looked very appealing compared to the rest of him. With cold empty eyes he slipped the shirt on and buttoned it up.
A muscle tight in his jaw from fighting his embarrassment. He didn't usually let people see that, mostly because they weren't used to seeing their 'pampered' boss as the hideous creature from the black lagoon like he was, and that raised questions. But he let Hayden see, because there was more to her than met the eye, and she could see the hell he'd handled before, and that he could still handle now, and if she really was working for Cortez, she'd pull a gun on him now.... Or at least he hoped... hoped? Was he trying to make her shoot him? Maybe he was? Interesting thought... he'd have to evaluate it later. King covered up the mess that he was and managed to clear his mind, "Thank you, for expecting the unexpected for me."
Truth was he'd just found his shirt when she'd walked up, but he wasn't about to tell her that, it would just piss her off, and in this 100 degree whether the last thing he wanted was another issue or a complication. But then again they seemed to follow him everywhere.... King's eyes caught the black Honda with tinted windows, his eyes narrowing as he watched it start up and begin driving slowly away. King didn't make any move to follow it or right down a license plate. The only people that obvious was the CIA and they had a bone to pick with him lately. "God," King said accidentally. 'FBI and CIA all in one day,' he thought.
-You can make the last one spoken accidentally if you want, but if you'd rather keep it a thought ... what ever works for you xD-

Hers were less noticeable, but she couldn't say she had less. She knew she didn't. He just didn't need to know that. She shrugged at his thanks, turning and leaning against the truck, just enough that, by sheer luck, the CIA wouldn't have been able to see her face. Not enough of it, anyway. Then her eyes caught sight of the tinted windows through the mirrors of the truck. The vaguely amused smile that had slipped onto her face disappeared instantly. She could practically hear her heart beating twice as loud as any noise around them. She watched it carefully, waiting until the vehicle left, eyes cold, tints of fear in them. Fear she simply couldn't hide, not this time.
As soon as it pulled away, her phone was whipped out. She didn't care if King was there, he wasn't the problem. Fingers tapped away at the touch screen and a moment later, she was plugged into her video feeds set up at her house. She scanned through them, heart racing, but there was no sign of black cars or agents. Her head shot up to look after the path that the car had gone, eyebrows furrowing.
If they weren't here about her, why were they here? Or perhaps they just hadn't found her house yet?
She wasn't sure she wanted to find out. There was no pause to explain, no reason given to King. Instead, she tossed her still half full cup of coffee in the nearby garbage can and immediately got into her car, keys fished out and the car started in a matter of moments. No way in hell she was risking staying around. That was another rule. Number six. Don't wait for your cover to be blown; get out when things went south.
